7 Simple Ways to Prep for NYC Triathlon Race Day

Coach Earl Walton of Tailwind Endurance has compiled a few last-minute tips this week in preparation for the NYC Triathlon this Sunday, July 14. Check them out … and as Earl so eloquently said it: Let the current carry you down the river, a tailwind push you along the bike leg, and your very own fast feet hurl you across the finish line! Good luck!

#1 – Get your bike tuned up. This is first because the minute you read this you must make your appointment. There are over 4,000 athletes racing this weekend and the shops are going to be backed up.

#2 – Get your plan set. Take 30 minutes. Rewrite the original reason you signed up for this race, then write out the strategy you have to make this a great day! If you can’t write down how to make race day great … then sleep in on Sunday.

#3 – Sleep. Add an hour to your sleep time every day this week.

#4 – Know your course. Your taper runs should all start from the transition area this week. Get to know the ins and outs now while the sun is up, rather than on race morning in the dark.

#5 – Buy a roll of toilet paper. Bring it to the race site on race morning. Carry it to the port o’ jon line. Be the most popular person in line!

#6 – In heavy traffic, a conservative bike may just mean a blazing fast run!

#7 – Water bottle strategy: Take your water bottles, freeze half the bottle overnight so you have a nice ice block in there. Carry the bottle in a thermos bag to transition. Unpack and put it on your bike. It should be chilled when you begin your bike leg.
